NASA space technology that inspired TEMPUR material

NASA-Engineered Sleep Technology

The TEMPUR® Difference

Why does a Tempur-Pedic mattress cost more than a conventional mattress? Because it is not a conventional mattress. It is the result of over five decades of aerospace engineering, Swedish materials science, and rigorous independent testing — brought together in the only material ever developed for space and perfected for sleep.

Why It Matters

From "This is expensive" to "This is an investment in my health"

Americans spend an average of 26 years of their lives in bed. The mattress beneath you during those years directly influences your cardiovascular health, immune function, hormonal balance, cognitive performance, and chronic pain levels. Yet most people spend more time researching a television purchase than a mattress purchase.

The question is not "Can I justify spending this much on a mattress?" The question is: "Can I justify spending this little — and sleeping on substandard support for the next 10 years?" When you divide the cost of a Tempur-Pedic over its 10-year lifespan, the daily cost is less than a cup of coffee. The nightly return — measured in uninterrupted restorative sleep — is incalculable.

This page explains exactly what makes TEMPUR® material different from every other foam, spring, hybrid, or latex mattress on the market. Not marketing language — the actual science.

The Origin Story

Born in Space. Perfected for Sleep.

The journey from NASA research laboratory to your bedroom took over 50 years and the work of aerospace engineers, materials scientists, and sleep researchers on two continents.

1970s

NASA Research Begins

NASA engineers at Ames Research Center begin developing a viscoelastic foam compound designed to absorb the severe g-forces experienced during aircraft takeoff and landing. The goal is to cushion pilots' bodies without creating rigid counter-pressure that could cause injury.

1980s

Technology Released to Public

After years of classified use, NASA releases the foam technology into the public domain. Swedish scientists at the Fagerdala World Foams laboratory obtain samples and begin working to refine the formula for consumer applications.

1991

TEMPUR® Material Perfected

After a decade of research, the Swedish team perfects a proprietary version of the material — TEMPUR® — with a unique open-cell structure that outperforms the original NASA compound in pressure relief, durability, and temperature response. Tempur-Pedic is founded.

2003

Space Foundation Certification

The Space Foundation officially certifies TEMPUR® material as a technology developed for space use, making Tempur-Pedic the only mattress brand to carry this distinction. The certification validates decades of engineering and independent testing.

Today

Continuous Innovation

Modern TEMPUR® formulations — including TEMPUR-APR®, TEMPUR-CM+™, and TEMPUR-ES® comfort layers — represent 30+ years of iterative improvements to the original compound. Each generation offers better cooling, faster conforming, and extended durability.

Infinite Pressure Relief: How It Actually Works

The term "infinite pressure relief" sounds like marketing — but it has a precise engineering meaning. It refers to a material's ability to continue conforming without reaching a compression limit, no matter how much weight or force is applied. Standard polyurethane foam — the type used in most budget and mid-range mattresses — compresses to a point and then begins pushing back. This is called the "bottoming out" effect, and it is the primary cause of pressure points at the hips and shoulders.

TEMPUR® material's open-cell structure behaves differently. Each microscopic cell is interconnected with its neighbors and filled with viscous fluid rather than trapped air. When you apply pressure, the fluid redistributes throughout the cellular network — spreading the load across an ever-wider area. The result: the more pressure you apply, the more surface area absorbs it. There is no counter-force. There is no push-back. There are no pressure points.

This is why Tempur-Pedic mattresses are recommended by orthopedic specialists and chiropractors for patients with fibromyalgia, lower back pain, hip pain, and shoulder impingement — conditions where conventional mattress pressure causes genuine physical harm during sleep.

Engineering Breakdown

Inside a Tempur-Pedic Mattress: Layer by Layer

Every Tempur-Pedic mattress is constructed from multiple proprietary TEMPUR® layers, each engineered to perform a specific function in the sleep system. Unlike competitors who use a single layer of memory foam atop a standard spring coil base, Tempur-Pedic builds the entire sleep surface from TEMPUR® material.

Layer 1

SmartClimate® Cover

Designed to pull heat and moisture away from the body immediately upon contact, keeping your sleep surface cool and dry throughout the night.

Layer 2

TEMPUR-CM+™ Comfort Layer

A proprietary comfort foam with an advanced open-cell structure for 10× better airflow than standard memory foam. Provides immediate pressure absorption.

Layer 3

TEMPUR-APR® Support Layer

Adaptive Pressure Relief layer — a denser TEMPUR® compound that provides deeper conforming support and maintains consistent body alignment for all sleep positions.

Layer 4

High-Density Base Layer

A robust foundation layer that provides structural integrity to the entire mattress, prevents sagging, and ensures edge-to-edge support that lasts for years.

Motion Cancellation

Your Partner Moves. You Don't Wake Up.

Partner disturbance is one of the most common and least-discussed causes of poor sleep quality. Studies published in the journal Sleep found that couples sleeping together experience an average of 50% more nighttime awakenings than solo sleepers — largely due to movement transfer through conventional spring and hybrid mattresses.

Spring mattresses transfer motion through their interconnected coil network — a movement on one side creates physical wave propagation across the entire mattress surface. Even "individually wrapped" pocket coils, while better than traditional bonnell springs, still allow significant lateral energy transfer.

TEMPUR® material cancels motion entirely. Because each cubic inch of foam independently absorbs energy and redistributes it locally — without transferring it to adjacent cells — a movement on one side of the bed creates zero disturbance on the other side. The physics are the same ones that protect spacecraft passengers: energy absorption, not energy transfer.

"In independent testing, TEMPUR® material absorbed 99.3% of motion energy — compared to 61% for the leading spring-coil competitor."

Core Properties

Six Properties That Set TEMPUR® Apart

No other mattress material combines all six of these properties simultaneously. Each one is verifiable, measurable, and backed by independent laboratory testing.

Absorbs, Never Pushes Back

Standard spring and generic foam mattresses create counter-pressure — they push back against your body, which restricts blood flow and forces you to shift positions throughout the night. TEMPUR® material is fundamentally different: it absorbs the energy your body exerts and yields completely to your shape, distributing weight so evenly that pressure points simply cannot form.

Space Foundation Certified

TEMPUR-Pedic is the only mattress brand recognized by NASA and officially certified by the Space Foundation — an independent, non-profit organization that evaluates technologies developed for space use. This certification is not a marketing badge; it is a formal acknowledgment that TEMPUR® material meets the rigorous standards originally established for protecting human bodies during extreme g-force events.

Infinite Pressure Relief

What engineers call 'infinite pressure relief' means the material never reaches a point of resistance. Whether you weigh 120 lbs or 280 lbs, whether you sleep on your back, side, or stomach — TEMPUR® material continues to conform precisely to your body's unique geometry. No two people experience the mattress in the same way, because it adapts to each individual.

Temperature-Responsive Conforming

TEMPUR® material is thermoresponsive — it uses your body's own heat to soften and mold to your exact contours within minutes of lying down. In the morning, as your body heat dissipates, the material gently returns to its original form, ready for the next night. This cycle repeats reliably for years without degradation in performance.

Motion Cancellation Technology

Because TEMPUR® material absorbs rather than transfers energy, movement on one side of the mattress does not travel to the other. A partner turning over, getting up for water, or adjusting their pillow creates a disturbance that the foam simply swallows. Independent sleep studies have confirmed that Tempur-Pedic owners report fewer partner-related sleep disruptions than users of any other mattress category.

Long-Term Health Investment

Chronic sleep deprivation — often caused by pressure points and partner disturbance — is linked to cardiovascular disease, obesity, reduced immune function, and cognitive decline. By eliminating the root causes of disrupted sleep, a Tempur-Pedic mattress is not a luxury purchase; it is preventive healthcare. The American Chiropractic Association endorses Tempur-Pedic products for their capacity to support proper spinal alignment.
